Hi all (who are basking in the long vacation break), I'd believe you would have received an email from the registrar, updating you guys on the postponement of common test from week 11 to week 12, as well as the e-learning schedule designated for each group of students. Kindly adhere to the schedule for you guys and complete the assignments accordingly (where applicable). Also, STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED to be in the campus next week! Similarly, please do not go on vacation, particularly to affected areas, during next week. All students found to be overseas next week (paricularly to affected areas as listed by MOH) will have to undergo quarantine for a period of 7 days upon returning to Singapore. You will not be allowed to sit for your common test while in quarantine and that would constitute to an automatic failure for the affected paper(s). Please take note and stay healthy. Cheers, JohnnyQ

The 1st outing is to the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery where students will be able to: Visit the SCDF building and learn about the fire engines and equipments (of the past and present). The modules are as follows: Module 1: First Aid Module 2: CPR Module 3: Fire Safety and Casualty Evacuation Module 4: Emergency Procedures Module 5: Unconventional Threats However, as time is a constraint, we've decided to proceed with Module 3: Fire Safety and Casualty Evacuation: Here's the Module Syllabus: -Triangle of combustion -Methods of extinguishing fires -Classification of fires -Method of operating an extinguisher -Smoke detectors -Actions to take when a fire breaks out -Actions to take when you are trapped in a fire situation -Actions to take when your clothes catches fire -Actions to take when evacuating from buildings -Casualty Evacuation Schedule as follows : Visit to Civil Defence Heritage Gallery Date: 22nd July 09 (Wed) Time : 3-6 pm Venue : Civil Defence Heritage Gallery (Inside Central Fire Station) No. 62 Hill Street Note: Limited to 50 students Fire Safety and Casualty Evacuation Programme Date: 29th July 09 (Wed) Time : 3-6 pm Venue : To be announced Note: Limited to one class (Perhaps do this as a Mentor-Mentee outing) The outings are open to all 1st year students, all students who attend this outing will earn 1 NE point. Hey people, Ying Thong is trying to organize a class outing even for our class. So, she is wondering if any one who is interested in going for the class outing. This class outing is optional however, it would be great if you can join in the fun as the more the merrier. Infomation as follow. Activity: Picnic, beach acitivities. Venue: Sentosa Date: 14 of June(Subject to change as it is Father Day) Time: Morning Price: The price is still not sure as for now, but you would need to pay for the entrance fee and for the food. For those who are interested, you may tell Ying Thong in the class, msn, sms . Try not to tell her via the chatbox since people rarely go there anyway. She is looking forward to having a nice class outing. For any changes, new post will be posted on this blog and of course sms will be sent to those who is comfirm going. Regard, Melvin.

Hi folks, Please see attached a picture illustrating a typical micrograph of an acid-fast stained slide (Ref: http://inst.bact.wisc.edu/inst/index.php?module=Book&func=displayarticle&art_id=147). Accordingly, the red colored cells are considered as acid-fast organisms while those in purple/blue are non acid-fast organisms (Please read through your theory section in the practical manual for the interpretations). As per our staining in the class (performed by myself and Randall C, Alina, Anna and others), we did not manage to see what was depicted in the attached diagram. Instead, our supposingly acid-fast organism was stained purple/blue. For your lab report pertaining to the acid-fast bit, I would like you guys to discuss briefly on what could have contributed to our 'failure' of not getting the expected results. Similarly, like what I had told some of your classmates on your Gram staining, I'd can remember vividly who were those who did not manage to get the expected Gram stain results. For example, E. coli was stained purple while S. aureus was stained pink. I would like those of you to reflect your observations as truthfully as possible. As long as you are able to offer a logical explanation pertaining to your observation, e.g. over-decolorization of cells, resulting in wrong color observation etc etc, I'd still award you with the marks accordingly. At the end of the day, you guys want to be trained in the proper way of documenting a scientific observation and not just solely on getting an extra mark or two for your reports. JohnnyQ

Thanks, Jess MICROBIO-REPORT
Dear all, Since I have received numerous queries pertaining to the abovementioned, I'd reckon it would be better to do a posting here to address those concerns. 1. Introduction - You do not have to restrict your introduction to only 8 - 10 lines. It can be abit longer since it has to cover all 3 practicals. Remember, your introduction has to flow and should be in a continuous paragraph form and the contents have to be coherent. 2. Serial dilution - the term means 'a series of dilutions'. The primary objective is to dilute your unknown culture sufficiently to ascertain the concentration of the unknown. In our case, the 1000X dilution is still insufficient for us to determine the unknown concentration, simply, the number of colonies on the plate fell outside the 25 - 250 cfu/ml range. For the report, it should cover all that you've done during the practical session, which extends to all sections of the report (except materials and methods). JohnnyQ

Hi all, I'd believe you've received an email from the registrar informing you of the updates for week 11. Please ensure that you'd adhere to the respective e-learning time slots designated and complete your assignments accordingly (when applicable). Also, all students are barred from coming to campus next week. Please take note. Stay healthy! Cheers, JohnnyQ

JohnnyQ

Dear FS0903, hey guys rmb on fri johnny pass me the essential of writing good reports for microbio. i'm print for everyone its cost 10cent each also related to microbio, we are purchasing markers for our prac, so i'm collect 40cents each for the markers. *so total pls pass my 50cents each by wed so that i got time to go purchase the markers.
JohnnyQ
